At our annual celebration we’ll not only honor those who championed housing justice, we’ll also hear music by the Benn Family, who lost four homes during the Eaton Canyon wildfires, yet have not lost hope or their love of music. They performed at America’s Got Talent and received a standing ovation. What a honor to have them join us!

Celebrating successes.....
The Congregational Land Committee we started four years ago is now its own nonprofit! So far, it has planned 1600 affordable units on underutilized congregational land throughout So Cal. We’re supporting congregations whose churches have burned in Altadena, as well as apprenticing teams in TX, CO, WA and NorCal. Our RV program is providing a virtually free RV to Louise St Juste, long-time Altadena resident whose home was burned (shown here with her son and with members of our team: Jill, Karen Gibbs and Anthony). Our goal is to expand to 30 families. The Ramona Street project next to Pasadena's City Hall (which we advocated for) was just approved for $4.75 million in state housing trust funds. We can’t wait to see 100 beautiful affordable apartments become available to low-income and unhoused seniors when it opens in 2028! Diane Lee, one of the Fellows who completed our 6-session training program this spring, participated along with 20 others in a meeting of the Transportation Department at La Pintoresca Park. This was a significant step towards funding a “complete streets” makeover of N. Fair Oaks. Just showing up is bringing millions of dollars in grants to our city! Her church, New Guiding Light Missionary Baptist, was one of five churches that received an award from MHCH for its partnership with us and the community.

Our goals for the future.....
 | We continue to partner with Pasadena’s Clergy Community Coalition (CCC), comprised of over 100 pastors that meet monthly to hear from and pray for city officials. MHCH and CCC’s Housing Justice Committee are working to promote the Right to Return for Altadenans displaced by the wildfires and for Pasadenans displaced for economic reasons and exclusionary policies. During the CCC’s 20th anniversary celebration in September, MHCH was honored for our housing justice work. We will also continue our educational work: our Housing Justice Institutes and our Housing Justice Forum. We will be promoting the use of The Unjust Housing Game (which we created and played since 2017) and is now published professionally! It will be played at the 7th Day Adventist Ending Homelessness Conference in NorCal in November by over 120 attendees. Joelle Chinnock, conference coordinator, said, “The Unjust Housing Game is a powerful, interactive tool that sparks meaningful conversation about the complex, painful and often overlooked history of housing segregation and inequality in America.” It’s also fun to play!
