About Us
Kotobuki Taiko, founded in 2008 by our late Sensei Carol Ayers, is a community group of 70 senior taiko drummers ranging in age from 65 to 90. We attend weekly taiko classes at the San Francisco Stonestown Family YMCA Annex.
The name “Kotobuki” means “celebration of longevity” or “long life”. Our mission is to teach the joy and art of taiko drumming to our members and to share our joy when we perform at community events. It is through this process that we promote health, wellbeing, and fellowship.
Our program is composed of all volunteers, including our teachers. The demand and interest for taiko continues to increase among seniors. While taiko is commonly practiced by the young, strong and athletic, Kotobuki Taiko demonstrates that there is no age barrier to drumming.
Taiko is known for its powerful rhythms and large drums. But due to space limitations at the Stonestown Family YMCA Annex, we only play on small drums in our weekly classes. In order to give our students the opportunity to learn and play on large drums, we rent space at the George and Tula Christopher Athletic Center (part of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in San Francisco) where we store our large drums and where we hold workshops and additional classes. This is made possible through a year-to-year grant awarded to us from the San Francisco Department of Disability and Aging Services (DAS).

It's a fact of life: Credit card companies and online payment processors take a cut from every transaction. Social Good Fund gives you the option to cover those fees so that TaikoFutures gets the full benefit you intended.
