Since I first started volunteering with Salted Roots in 2022, my relationship with the ocean has completely transformed. Laughing and playing in the surf and on the beach during summer camp, surf meetups and other programs has given me a sense of belonging in the surf lineup that I had never felt before. Some of the best memories with Salted Roots have been hearing the eruption of cheers when riding a wave or wiping out, and cheering others on as they do the same.
I feel the benefits ripple out to my mental and spiritual wellbeing, and how I am able to show up in relationships and community. I feel so blessed to now serve as Salted Roots Volunteer Manager; it has been a true joy to make deeper connections with staff, volunteers, participants, and our beautiful coast.

What we do.
Salted Roots is an Oakland-based nonprofit working to expand access to the ocean for girls, women, and gender-expansive people of color. Through surf programs, mentorship, and community programming, we’re building a more inclusive surf culture rooted in joy, connection, and belonging.
What we've done.
Over the past 10 years, Salted Roots has built a growing community grounded in access, representation, and leadership. Since our first community surf program in 2016, our community has grown to 5,000. We’ve introduced thousands of individuals in Oakland to the ocean, many for the first time. We’ve created pathways for youth to become leaders, mentors, and stewards of their communities. We’ve shown that when people feel safe and supported, the ocean becomes a place where they can truly be themselves. None of this happens alone. It happens because of this community, and people like you, volunteers, donors, and supporters who believe that the ocean belongs to everyone.

scholarships, transportation, program equipment, and the trained
