Since 2020, BAY-Peace has empowered more than 80 youth to transform violence and promote healing in their community — and 100% of them reported feeling supported in their healing, growth, and transformation as community leaders.

Over the last 5 years, our Youth Participatory Action Research has given us a clear picture of how violence and trauma affect youth — and what truly empowers them to rise above these challenges. Overtime, we've diligently built our programming to ensure that we are giving them the space they need to truly heal, grow and thrive.

1 in 3 Oakland youth are victims of violence, and 1 in 4 struggle with trauma, anxiety, or depression. Gun violence is the number one cause of death for youth ages 15-24 in our country. Violence is not just a systemic issue, it's also cultural. This, compounded with the youth mental health crisis, creates significant risk factors for our youth. 

Our new youth-led strategic plan goals call upon us to:

• Build youth agency to prevent violence, promote safety, and foster healing in schools, homes, and neighborhoods.
• Advance intergenerational healing by creating spaces and education that support both youth and their families.
• Develop dynamic youth leaders through community-based programs that reduce the impacts of stress, trauma, and violence.
• Strengthen our capacity to employ and support youth leaders through collaborative, community-centered fundraising and base-building.

They're calling on us to enrich the soil they stand in. Offering nourishing care, support, safety, and power.

Our youth are living garden--rooted in leadership, nourished by community, and brought to life through vibrant art and heart-felt organizing. Together, we tend to an ecosystem where young people don't just survive. They bloom.
