San Francisco Taiko Dojo has always been more than the sound of drums — it’s been a heartbeat, a family, a legacy. For over 55 years, under the leadership of Grandmaster Seiichi Tanaka, Taiko Dojo has brought not only rhythm and movement, but a way of life grounded in respect, discipline, and spirit.

Now, we are at a pivotal moment.
A moment of reflection. A moment of transition.
A moment to soar.
A moment for Hishou — to take flight toward a sustainable future.

The Journey So Far

We’ve faced incredible challenges over the past few years.

The pandemic forced us out of our practice space. Our drums — our instruments of our spirit — are currently silenced in multiple storage units. And yet, we kept going.

We kept going because you, our community, lifted us up.

You helped us adapt. You stood by us. You kept the Taiko Dojo spirit alive when the world felt quiet.

Even without a space to call home, a small but resilient group of students and performers has remained — thanks to your support. We’ve continued to practice wherever we could, keeping the heartbeat of Taiko Dojo alive. Along the way, we've even fostered a new generation of young taiko players in San Mateo and San Francisco’s Japantown.

And now, with Tanaka Sensei’s health challenges, we feel the urgency of this moment more than ever.

We must act now — to honor his legacy, and ensure that Taiko Dojo can rise into its next chapter.
