Mindfulness Education in South Central LA
Mindfulness Education Keeps Kids Safe
Schools lack culturally responsive wellness infrastructure but our program fills this gap by embedding mindfulness and art education that promotes resilience, healing, and emotional safety where students need it most. Students are navigating chronic stress due to anti-immigrant policies, gun violence, pandemic grief, & climate disasters. In 2024, NCES data shows the pandemic’s lingering effects continue to have a negative impact on socio-emotional wellbeing including increased apathy & defiant behavior. These compounding traumas reduce students’ ability to focus, connect, and feel safe at school. The need for trauma-informed wellness programs is urgent—especially in communities where children face daily fears of family separation, loss, or displacement. Our program directly addresses these threats to safety by cultivating care, empathy & connection.
The Mindfulness Education Project started in 2021 with a year around 8 month school-based program that strengthens emotional and community safety. Each month, our specialized instructors offer a curricula based in self awareness, movement and art. Through the variety of activities, students build emotional intelligence, deepen connections and develop tools for self-regulation, communication, and collective care. At the end of each session, children are assigned a mindfulness practice to do at home to support their continued socio-emotional development.
We need your help to continue this work in 2026 and beyond. Last year federal budget cuts devastated our program, but by joining us in this campaign, you'll be part of something bigger than yourself—a movement for positive change and social impact.
Your contribution directly supports free and low-cost yoga and mindfulness classes for children and families in LA’s public schools.
Thank you for your generosity and support.
