Sustainability Fund for Healthier and Greener Communities
At HERI-Kenya (Health + Environmental Research Institute), we believe that the health of our people is inseparable from the health of our environment. Since our founding, we have worked to bridge the gap between science, community action, and sustainability, creating local solutions to global challenges.
Every program we run from organic waste recycling using Black Soldier Flies (BSF) to community health forums, youth capacity building, and eco-restoration initiatives is rooted in a simple idea: Healthy People. Healthy Planet. Sustainable Living.
What We Do
1. Health for All:
We bring health education and awareness directly to communities
empowering families to make informed choices about hygiene and
preventive care.
2. Environmental Stewardship:
Through our Black Soldier Fly Farm, we convert
organic waste into valuable compost and animal feed reducing
pollution, improving sanitation, and creating green livelihoods. The
farm also serves as a Community Resource Center for training and learning.
3. Sustainability Education:
We train young people, women, and community groups to become
sustainability champions equipping them with
knowledge and skills to manage waste, restore ecosystems, and advocate
for climate action.
4. Research and Policy Action:
We collaborate with academic institutions like Stanford
University and Technical University of Mombasa to conduct
applied research that informs policy and practice — ensuring that
community voices and local data shape the sustainability agenda.
