HERI@5: Securing Research-Informed Waste Solutions for Healthier Communities
At Health and Environmental Research Institute – Kenya (HERI-Kenya), we are committed to advancing community health and environmental sustainability through research-driven, locally grounded solutions. Over the past five years, we have worked closely with communities in Diani, South Coast Kenya to understand the growing challenge of organic waste and its direct impact on public health, environmental degradation, and livelihoods.
In response, we established the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farm, a practical, evidence-informed solution that converts organic waste into valuable resources such as organic fertilizer and animal protein feed. This model has demonstrated clear results: reducing waste pollution, improving environmental conditions, and creating economic opportunities for local communities. It is a proven system, built on research and refined through real-world application.
However, despite this progress, the farm currently operates on land that is not yet secured. This limits our ability to invest in long-term infrastructure, expand operations, and fully realize the impact of this solution.
This campaign marks a critical transition, from proof to permanence. By securing the land, we will establish a permanent foundation for scaling research-driven waste solutions that directly improve community health, strengthen environmental resilience, and unlock sustainable economic opportunities.
Your support will enable us to acquire this land and expand the BSF farm into a fully developed hub for waste management innovation, community training, and applied research. It will allow us to deepen our impact locally while building a model that can be replicated in other communities facing similar challenges.
What began as a response to a local problem has proven effective. Now, with your support, it can become a lasting solution.
Join us in celebrating five years of impact by helping secure the future of a system that works—for the environment, for community health, and for sustainable livelihoods.
