Today is Jewish Justice Giving Day. At Playing Together Project, we're on a mission to improve the relationship between Blacks and Jews and center Black Jews - all through dinner and dialogue with some film, music and art thrown in the mix! . With your support, we can create more dinner events and more spaces at the table!
It began as a dream of mine, to bring people together at the intersection where I naturally live as an African American Jewish woman. I envisioned (and still do now, having dialogue happen over food. So why not over Shabbat? This Playing Together Project was born. It began with one dinner and one tent at a Juneteenth Freedom Festival, educating people about the connection between Blacks and Jews in America. I funded it out of my own pocet and with the help of some members of my synagogue who wanted to help make the dream a reality. Here we are now, four years later!
Every day, we see the positive impact of our Shabbat dinner gatherings on individuals and families. Today, we need to come together and build bridges even more than in the past as antisemitism and racism rise.
This is our primary activity - holding small dinners a few times a year - and we would like to increase the number of dinners and numbers of sets at the table. We also have a mobile exhibit of the interwoven history of African Americans and American Jews that we take to a Juneteenth Freedom Festival each year and to other events in the Jewish community in San Diego.
But we can't do it alone. We need your help to continue creating and serving dinners, presenting educational programs and both upgrading and expanding the exhibit materials.
