Who We Are

Future Farmers Foundation is a South African organisation dedicated to creating meaningful pathways for young people into agriculture and related careers.

We believe that agriculture is not simply about producing food — it is about creating opportunities, developing skills, building livelihoods and strengthening communities. Our work focuses on helping young people identify their potential, develop practical and employability skills, access workplace opportunities and build sustainable careers.

Through mentorship, skills development, work-based learning, apprenticeships, career guidance and partnerships with employers and training institutions, Future Farmers Foundation connects young people with opportunities that can change the direction of their lives.

Our Vision

A future where young people have the skills, opportunities and confidence to build successful careers and businesses in agriculture and contribute meaningfully to their communities and the agricultural sector.

Our Mission

To empower young people through practical skills development, mentorship, career opportunities and meaningful connections with the agricultural sector, enabling them to become productive, employable and future-focused contributors to agriculture and their communities.

What We Do

Future Farmers Foundation works across the pathway from potential to opportunity to employment and beyond .

Skills Development

We provide young people with practical knowledge and skills that prepare them for the realities of the workplace and the agricultural sector.

Our programmes can include:

  • Agricultural and vocational skills development
  • Workplace readiness
  • Life and employability skills
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
  • Leadership and personal development
  • Career planning and guidance
  • Entrepreneurship and business awareness
  • Practical exposure to different areas of agriculture

Mentorship

Mentorship is central to our approach.

Young people need more than qualifications. They need people who can help them understand their options, navigate challenges, recognise opportunities and make informed decisions about their futures.

Our mentors provide guidance, encouragement and practical support while helping participants develop the confidence and resilience required to succeed.

Work-Based Learning and Apprenticeships

We actively seek opportunities for young people to gain real-world workplace experience .

We connect participants with farms, agricultural businesses, estates, hospitality operations and other organisations where they can develop practical skills while learning from experienced professionals.

Where appropriate, we support young people in securing apprenticeships, internships, placements and other employment pathways.

Employment and Career Opportunities

Our objective is not simply to train young people — it is to help them move forward .

We work with employers and industry partners to identify opportunities and help young people prepare for, access and succeed in the workplace.

This includes supporting participants with:

  • Identifying suitable career pathways
  • Preparing for employment
  • CVs and applications
  • Interview preparation
  • Workplace expectations
  • Connecting with potential employers
  • International opportunities where appropriate

International Opportunities

Future Farmers Foundation recognises the enormous value of international exposure.

Where opportunities arise, we assist suitable candidates to access international training, work experience and career opportunities. These experiences allow young people to broaden their horizons, develop new skills and gain exposure to different agricultural systems and cultures.

We also believe that international experience can have a multiplier effect when participants return and share what they have learned with others.

Our Approach

Our approach is built around a simple question:

"What comes next?"

For many young people, the answer is uncertain.

They may have completed school or training but have no clear pathway into employment. Others may have a passion for agriculture but lack the networks, experience or confidence needed to enter the sector.

Future Farmers Foundation works to bridge that gap.

We help young people move from:

Potential → Skills → Experience → Opportunity → Employment → Growth

We recognise that every young person follows a different pathway. Some may enter agriculture directly. Others may discover opportunities in hospitality, conservation, animal production, agribusiness, tourism or related industries.

Our role is to help them identify their strengths, access opportunities and keep moving forward.

The Importance of Agriculture

Agriculture remains fundamental to South Africa's future.

It contributes to food security, employment, economic development and the sustainability of rural communities. At the same time, the sector needs a new generation of skilled, motivated and adaptable people.

Future Farmers Foundation seeks to contribute to this future by investing in people .

We believe that developing young people is one of the most important investments that can be made in the agricultural sector.

Our Impact

Our work is about more than numbers.

Success can mean a young person:

  • Finding their first meaningful employment
  • Completing an apprenticeship
  • Discovering a career they are passionate about
  • Developing confidence and independence
  • Gaining practical workplace experience
  • Accessing further education or training
  • Starting a business
  • Receiving an opportunity they never believed was possible
  • Returning to their community with new knowledge and skills
  • Becoming a mentor and role model for others

One opportunity can change a life. One changed life can influence a family, a community and ultimately the future of the sector.

A Growing Network of Partners

Future Farmers Foundation works through partnerships.

We believe sustainable impact is achieved by bringing together:

  • Young people
  • Farmers and agricultural businesses
  • Employers
  • Training institutions
  • Government departments and agencies
  • Corporate partners
  • Non-profit organisations
  • International partners
  • Mentors and industry professionals

These relationships create pathways that no single organisation could provide on its own.

Our Young People

Our participants come from diverse backgrounds and have different interests, talents and aspirations.

Some are passionate about livestock. Others are interested in crops, horticulture, conservation, hospitality, tourism, agricultural business or entrepreneurship.

We do not believe there is a single definition of a "Future Farmer".

A Future Farmer is someone who is prepared to learn, work, adapt, contribute and build a future .

Looking Forward

Future Farmers Foundation is committed to expanding the pathways available to young people.

Our future priorities include strengthening our mentorship and skills-development programmes, expanding partnerships with employers and agricultural organisations, creating additional apprenticeship and workplace opportunities, and connecting more young South Africans with local and international opportunities.

We want to build a network in which young people can enter at different points and continue progressing throughout their careers.

We don't simply ask young people what they want to do.

We ask:

"What comes next?"

And then we work with them to help make that next step possible.

Partner With Us

Future Farmers Foundation welcomes partnerships with organisations and individuals who share our commitment to developing young people and strengthening the future of agriculture.

There are many ways to get involved:

Employ – provide workplace and employment opportunities.
Train – share technical and practical skills.
Mentor – invest your knowledge and experience in a young person.
Sponsor – help create access to training and opportunity.
Partner – collaborate on programmes and initiatives.
Open doors – connect young people with opportunities locally and internationally.

Together, we can create more pathways from potential to opportunity .
