Why B Corp?

My company, Green Retirement, is a founding B Corp. When we decided to start our own firm, we wanted to put our values into it. Our firm was focused on providing socially and environmentally responsible investments to the everyday working person through their 401k. We joined 1% for the Planet because we wanted to be with like minded companies. We were attracted to B Corp because we saw that it was more than being environmentally responsible. It was also about being socially responsible, as well as affirming that business was not just to benefit the owners, but to multiple stakeholders. The ethos of using business as a force for good deeply resonated with us.  

The Work

In addition to helping people and companies adopt values-aligned 401(k) investments, I’ve worked to educate my whole field about the topic. I was honored to earn a Captain of the Industry recognition from the National Association of Plan Advisors for that effort.

In 2018, in response to the question, “What can we do together that none of us can do alone?” I attended a convening of B Corp women leaders by Eileen Fisher. It was there that with two other women leaders, Sara Schley and Kim Coupounas, I co-founded WeTheChange. We worked on the WeTheChange Declaration and laid the ground for this amazing organization of engaged, generous, brilliant women leaders. 

Currently, I am running for Congress in California's District 2. I feel strongly that B Corp leaders are being called to action during this time of national turmoil. My campaign has three pillars:  People, Peace, and Planet. It is influenced by and deeply aligned with B Corp principles: putting people and workers before corporate profiteering; ending endless wars, promoting diplomacy, and redirecting resources toward public goods and services; and protecting the planet while building a just, regenerative economy. As a candidate through my campaign, and if elected as a Congresswoman, I am intent on using politics as a force for good.

How WeTheChange Helps

I’m still a member of WeTheChange because I deeply believe in that collective action, and I see it both in the ways we step up to help each other and in our advocacy for equity and justice. I have certainly reached out to my WeTheChange sisters for help with my campaigns (I ran in 2024 as well) -- and received it in ways small and large.

Why B Corp?

My company has been B Corp certified since 2021. I remember talking with a friend whose company was certified about my own business, and he said to me, “You’re already running your company like a B Corp — why aren't you certified yet?” That one conversation spurred me to learn more about the movement, to join WetheChange (which I did even before we got certified), and go through the certification process.

The Work

Our overarching goal at Dixon Consulting is to reduce systemic bias in pay and benefits, and to increase generational wealth for folks with identities that have been historically marginalized. Sometimes, clients come to us with the explicit desire to get after these things (like pay transparency, living wages, and collaborative performance management), and sometimes, we introduce the concepts more gently.

Regardless, we meet our clients where they are, and seek to bring them along the continuum. Because we work with values-aligned organizations, our clients typically do want to make moves where they’re able. And a fun fact: Alix Devendra, of Aligned Law, another WTC member, is helping us to get the new name of this important work trademarked: “Just Pay.” We’re very excited about it!

How WeTheChange Helps

It’s important to have safe spaces outside of the historical, patriarchal systems to be in community, both from a business and a personal perspective. WetheChange is that space for me.
